Lap Pools
Guncast’s stunning bespoke pools for lap swimming satisfy a niche market for facilities specifically targeting health and physical fitness. Our elegant designs for indoor or outdoor pools provide bathers with a tranquil, calm space to train, unwind, and relax, and are perfect for aquatic exercise.
What is a lap pool?
Lap pools are similar to traditional swimming pools but have unique dimensions. While a standard swimming pool is normally wide and balanced, lap pools are long, narrow and rectangular. Sizes vary according to available space and individual needs, but overall, they have length, making them perfect for swimming laps.

Our qualified and skilled maintenance team can provide ongoing support to help maintain the structural integrity of your lap pool and filtration system – keeping your pool clean, safe and fully functional for your convenience and continual pleasure.

Exercise pool features
Although a traditional lap pool is designed for lap swimming, they can also incorporate relaxing pool features to help you unwind after your workout. Powerful water jets can sooth tired muscles, while bubble jets or bubble loungers will gently massage your body. Additionally, built-in LED lighting can allow you to swim after the sun has gone down, whilst creating a calming ambiance, enhancing your post-swim relaxation experience.
A counter-current unit or spa jets produce resistance to increase workout intensity.
Lap pools can also lend themselves to luxury design features such as infinity edges which offer the ideal vantage point to admire a seamless view of the landscape in a relaxing and serene environment.
Your Questions Answered
Is lap swimming a good form of exercise?
Swimming is a great way to improve whole body and mental health and wellbeing. A lap pool can help keep you active, burn calories and aid weight loss (if done in conjunction with a healthy diet), relieve joint pain and improve sleep patterns.
What is a good size for a lap pool at home?
For effective lap swimming, a pool should be at least 12 metres long. If space is limited, consider a counter current system to simulate a longer pool. Smaller pools (under 11 metres) benefit from these systems, while resistance bands can be an option for very small pools.
What is the difference between deck level, freeboard, and infinity pools?
Freeboard pools have water below the edge, ideal for simple designs. Deck level pools have water flush with the deck, providing a sleek look but are more complex. Infinity pools create an illusion of water extending to the horizon, ideal for scenic views but are the most costly and complex to build.
How deep should my pool be for lap swimming and recreation?
A depth of 1.2 to 1.3 metres is ideal for lap swimming. For recreation, a varied depth of 1.2 to 1.8 metres offers versatility. Indoor pools generally require less depth, while outdoor pools may benefit from deeper areas for more activities.
Will I have to use chlorine in my pool?
A truly chlorine-free pool is unlikely unless you opt for a natural pool with reed beds. Conventional pools require chlorine for hygiene, though alternative disinfection methods like ozone systems can reduce chlorine levels significantly. Saltwater pools also produce chlorine via electrolysis. In summary, chlorine is necessary to ensure water safety.
Is my garden suitable for a lap pool?
Most gardens can accommodate a lap pool with the right planning. Considerations include site access, soil type, and water table. Our design team can assess your garden and provide tailored solutions to overcome any challenges.
